GOTHIC COLTURE.

It is basically indefinable, because "Goth" means different things to each follower. Many adopt unusual fashions in order to separate themselves from other youth. Gordon A. Crews, associate dean of the School of Justice Studies at Roger Williams University in Bristol, CT is an investigator of what he calls the "occult" which-- in his opinion -- includes the Goth culture. He said: "It is up to the individual to define what Goth is for themselves ... The mentality is, 'I want to be left alone but I want to be seen. I want to see the shock on other peoples' faces." 11
Some factors that are commonly observed are:
Its unique music, art and literature.
The use of extreme black clothing, light colored makeup, unusual hair styles, body piercing, bondage items, etc.
A fascination with medieval, Victorian and Edwardian history.
Wearing of symbols such as a Christian cross; an Egyptian ankh or "Eye of Ra," or "Eye of Horus;" a Wiccan pentacle, a Satanic inverted pentacle. etc. 14
Goths tend to be non-violent, pacifistic, passive, and tolerant. Many in the media have mistakenly associated Goth with extreme violence and hatred of minorities, white supremacy, etc.
Many Goths write about being depressed. Followers seem sullen and withdrawn, when in public. They are often much more "happy and carefree in the company of [other] Goths." 1 Examples of depression are:
"Tigriss," commenting on her own life, writes: "So my gothic persona fit me quite well. My black clothing and dark music aptly reflected my own depression, pain, and anger which was what I made most of my life about. Most of my goth friends had dysfunctional families and troubled childhoods as mine. We could identify with each other through our dark make-up and painful pasts." 12
Researcher Jasin Tamlin comments: "If you take a look at the 640 sites that are listed on the Gothic Web Ring, you will find many of them filled with desperation, depression, anger, hatred, despair and angst." 13
"A lot of people turn to the Gothic subculture after having a hard time in school, feeling alienated, and looking for a way to express themselves that mirrors those feelings. Others find the scene through literature, still others want to be shocking, and some people just find black clothing slimming." 1
Goth music often deals with thought-provoking topics, concentrating on societal evils, like racism, war, hatred of groups, etc. Their music tends to concentrate on the very "nasty, unhappy" topics that "North American culture" wants to "ignore and forget."
A fascination with death. They try "to find a different way of thinking about life, like trying to find beauty in life, pain and death. It's all a quest for immortality."

SLIPKNOT 2010 TOUR!

This October Slipknot guide their unholy army through the nine circles of hell on the All Hope is Gone 2008 world tour, their first tour of Australia since they stormed the main stages at the 2005 Big Day Out. At the turn of the millennium, Slipknot erupted onto the heavy music scene and their first three albums reset the course of the Metal genre. Multi million selling, three albums have been released, all platinum. Their massive popularity was acknowledged when, after being nominated for the sixth time in The Grammys for Best Metal Performance, Slipknot won the coveted award in 2006 for the track “Before I Forget”. Now the metal masses unite in anticipation of Slipknots fourth album 'All Hope Is Gone', due out though iconic label Roadrunner Records in August. Early leaks have garnered rave reviews and Slipknot rightly proclaim that 'All Hope Is Gone' will be their most malevolent effort yet.At their left hand will be the mighty Machine Head, pioneers of a brutal new sound Machine Head’s influential and ferocious debut Burn My Eyes was released in 1994. Several albums later Machine Head returned to the highest echelons of the metal world with the 2007 album The Blackening. For many critics it was the metal album of 2007: “one of the purest, finest, most powerful expressions of modern heavy metal released” and comparisons with the Metallica’s seminal Master Of Puppets were made. Now they bring their merciless metal to Slipknot's stages the world over.Tour dates are:Friday 24th Oct Riverstage BrisbaneTickets from www.ticketmaster.com.au 136 100Sunday 26th Oct Acer Arena Sydney Tickets from www.ticketek.com.au 132 849 and Utopia RecordsMonday 27th Oct Rod Laver Arena Melbourne Tickets from www.ticketek.com.au 132 849Tuesday 28th Oct Jubilee Pavilion Adelaide Showground Tickets from www.ticketek.com.au 132 849 Thursday 30th Oct Robinson Pavilion Perth Tickets from www.bocsticketing.com.au 08 9484 1133 & 78's www.78records.com.au 08 9322 6384

Nightmare On Elm Street 2010 (Movie review)

It's also true that fans are going into the theaters a little jaded when their favorite film is the subject of the latest envisioning. In fact — let's be honest — if you grew up watching and adoring a certain movie, chances are there is little the remake can do that will make you fall in love with it. That being said, having this mentality can also make you miss out on something that might be improved upon. The newest version of A Nightmare On Elm Street is the perfect example.

Franchise horror has been the backbone of the ooky, spooky genre for the better part of 30 years. While fans all have their favorite, A Nightmare On Elm Street has always been special. This is largely due to the fact that the bad guy has been faithfully played by Robert Englund in all 8 films preceding the current remake. When it was announced that Englund would not be putting on the glove for the new film, many wondered if another actor could really pull off Freddy Krueger. Jackie Earle Haley (who played the infamous character of Rorschach in Watchmen) proved to be a brilliant casting choice and indeed "pulled it off". Englund's version of Krueger has always been played tongue and cheek — this has perhaps been the part of the charm. Haley, though not without his one-liners, added more intensity to his interpretation of the monster. Haley also added in new mannerisms while still embracing the character's groundwork that Englund laid 26 years ago — a wonderful balance that takes a truly gifted actor to engage.

The remake's story was also substantially darker than the first movie. In this 2010 version, the teenagers experiencing the nightmares all share the common bond of being molested by their pre-school's gardener Fred Krueger. When the parents discovered what was happening to their children, they chased Krueger down and burned him alive. The children grew up to all have repressed memories of the sexual abuse and are now being picked off one by one in their sleep. In the original version, Krueger kills upwards of 20 children, stands trial, is released on a technicality, is hunted down by vigilantes and then burned in the boiler room where he hurt the children. He then seeks revenge on the vigilante's children in their sleep.

I feel that the new, slightly altered version of the story holds a bit more weight. It also brings in an even darker connection that Krueger has with "his children". There are a few scenes that really go into the psychology of memory repression and are incredibly difficult to watch — not what you're necessarily expecting from a franchise horror film! With all this being said, the movie is not without its glaring flaws either. The first being it's simply not that scary. The original film still has a way of completely unnerving you no matter how many times you watch it. The new version plays out more like a morbid episode of Law and Order than it does of a horror film. It's glossy, filled with several CGI gore effects, and gets its biggest jumps from the scenes directly taken from the first film. I wish they could have captured the grittier, more traditional horror movie feel of the original and combined it with the superior script of the remake.

I don't, however, regret watching this movie. There's enough here to appeal to the old fans as well as create new ones for the series. It's worth checking out while it's still in theaters and may even find a home on your movie shelf someday, if you're open-minded enough.
